Why Double Cleansing is a Game Changer

By Ami Kim

If you know anything about Korean skincare, then you’ve probably heard of double cleansing. But what exactly is it, and why has it become such a staple in skincare routines worldwide? Unlike beauty trends that will disappear in a couple of weeks, double cleansing is here to stay. This method deeply removes makeup, sunscreen, and daily buildup without stripping your skin. It leaves your skin fresh and ready for the rest of your routine.

What is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step cleansing method that uses two different types of cleansers:

  1. Oil-based cleanser

An oil-based cleanser will remove any oil-based impurities such as sunscreen, makeup, and excess sebum. This step is essential for breaking down waterproof and long-wear products.

  1. Water-based cleanser

Use a gentle foaming or gel cleanser to wash away sweat, dirt, and any residue left from the oil cleanser.

These two cleansers can ensure that your skin is completely clean without stripping it of its moisture.

Why It’s a Game Changer

  1. Removes everything

Water-based cleansers alone are not enough to break down sunscreen and waterproof makeup. Oil cleansers help to tackle stubborn products, allowing for a deep and thorough cleanse.

  1. Prevents breakouts

By clearing your pores of sebum, bacteria, and buildup, double cleansing helps reduce clogged pores and breakouts.

  1. Prep the skin for your skincare routine

Clean skin absorbs serums, essences, and moisturizers more effectively. It ensures that your products can penetrate the skin effectively and deliver the desired results.

  1. Gentle way to cleanse

Unlike harsh scrubs, double cleansing removes impurities without damaging your skin barrier. This makes it suitable for most skin types, even sensitive skin.

How to double-cleanse

  1. Start with dry hands and skin

Massage 1-2 pumps of an oil cleanser or a scoop of a cleansing balm into your skin for about a minute. Focus on areas with heavy makeup or oil buildup. Rinse with warm water.

When Should You Double Cleanse?

  • Every evening if you wear makeup or sunscreen ( which should be everyday to protect your skin! )

  • You don’t need to do it in the morning. A water-based cleanser alone is sufficient for a quick morning refresh.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using hot water can irritate and dry out the skin

  • Not rinsing between the oil and water cleansers.

  • Using a harsh water-based cleanser that strips the skin.

Double cleansing is a simple habit that delivers powerful results. If you struggle with clogged pores, dullness, or breakouts, this two-step cleansing method might be just what you need!
